Sir Revan Halyard is chained to a wall in a dungeon awaiting his death, when the niece of the owner, Contessa "Tess" Delgado arrives to free him. She was sent to live with her uncle many years ago. Dubious at first, but he allows her to free him, but when they are caught, he holds a knife to her throat to try to make a getaway. Tess regrets helping him, and she goes with Revan on the run. Revan is a landless knight for King James II with important information that needs to be told to the King before the Douglas clan assassinate him. Revan and Tess are slow to trust each other, but gradually learn to do so. Tess is in fact a very wealthy woman, and at the age of 18, has lands and estates in England and Spain. But her uncle, Thurkettle and his daughter, Brenda, want them for themselves, so have been plotting to get rid of Tess. She is also unaware that they are involved with the Douglas clan. Revan and Tess become lovers, but Revan tells her they cannot marry and Tess says this is OK, but secretly hopes to change his mind. On their journey back, Tess is kidnapped by her kin, when Revan saves her. She is taken aback when Revan's brother, Nairn kisses her, and she tells Revan, hoping he will be jealous. He is jealous, but doesn't tell her. They reach the safety of her kin, the Delgados, but aren't safe when the Thurkettles and Douglases still seek Revan and Tess, and are prepared to kill them both. Also, her kin are angered that he has been bedding her, and demands that they marry. Revan agrees, but isn't happy, as he knows he has nothing to offer her as he has no lands, and Tess doesn't want an arranged marriage. She wants him to want to marry her. She sceretly finds a way to let him escape the night before the wedding, and believes he has gone, but is stunned to find him at the alter the next day, after he realises he loves her and wants to marry her.Overall, the book is pretty good. We don't learn of Revan's age, and we only know Tess is 18. Usually in Hannah's books, we know the main protagonists ages. It was also nice to find out that Revan wished he came to Tess a virgin like her, which is a nice sentiment, something I have not read in her other books, which makes you feel more for his character.
