An earthquake along the Atlantic Ridge causes a domino effect of bad results including a massive tsunami that will flood much of the eastern coasts of South and North America. In order to save as many people as possible in the few hours before the waves hit, boats and ships of all types are rallied in a Dunkirk-like evacuation. Travis Cooke, his young son Darren, and his ex-wife and her new husband are among the people who have escaped from Manhattan on a luxury cruise liner. With little more than the clothes on their back, they still feel lucky to have gotten out of the city onto a safe vessel to ride out the impending flooding. While most disaster-scenario novels with a setup such as this one would tell the tale of the destructive force of the waves on the shoreline, the struggle for survival on land, and the land-based rescue efforts, this book has chosen to focus on the passengers and refugees on the cruise ship, the Festival of the Waves. The story is one of personalities and how people cope with confinement, uncertainty, and deathly peril when they are totally cut off from the rest of the world. Some rise to the occasion to provide leadership, provide comfort and aid to victims, and lend a hand to tirelessly try to fix problems that arise. Others turn to prayer, depression, or despair. The worst human traits also surface with cruelty, brutality, and megalomania. The book was well written and the various characters were diverse and well-drawn with many heroes, villains, and just plain folks caught up in the disaster. Do you know how would you react in such a situation? The ending seemed incomplete. There were many questions left unanswered about the disaster and the evacuees. Perhaps the author will write a sequel that will cover the tsunami event and its after effects for those along the east coast to complete the other side of the story and fill in the blanks for us.Recommended.

A thoroughly enjoyable maritime PA romp. Good rounded characters and an easy to read writing style. If you are a fan of PA novels you should enjoy this thriller in unusual settings.

Can't wait see if author publishes a follow up to find out characters could have survived outside the cruise ship.

  • By Mrs P M Evans on 6 August 2015

It started out to be a really good enthralling read, but then it seemed to go off the theme, it was horrific , but then seemed toget a bit boring after that, unless there is a follow up book.
